The conference is over. Now what?

2 November 2026

The final speaker has finished, the delegates have headed home, the exhibition stands have been packed away and it’s time for the event team to put their feet up (well, almost…)

After months of planning, seeing a successful conference come together is incredibly rewarding, but while the event itself might be over, the opportunities it creates shouldn’t be.

Conferences represent a significant investment of time, resources and budget. So, how do we make sure all those valuable conversations, connections and ideas don’t disappear when everyone returns to their day job?

The delegate journey doesn’t end when the conference does

We spend months carefully considering every aspect of the delegate experience, registration, networking, the onsite programme and every other detail but what happens next?

A thank you email and feedback survey shouldn’t be the end of the conversation. Delegates leave conferences full of fresh ideas, new contacts and good intentions. Thoughtful follow-up communications, useful resources and opportunities to reconnect can help maintain that momentum once everyday work takes over.

A well timed email sharing something purposeful (with links!) can go a long way to securing ticket sales, feedback or whatever your mission objective might be.

Keep the conversation going

For associations and membership organisations, annual conferences are often the biggest opportunity to bring their communities together – and we don’t think those conversations should happen just once a year.

Webinars, regional meet-ups, online forums and discussion groups can all help maintain connections in between key events. Think about which sessions sparked the most interest. Could a popular panel discussion become a webinar? Could delegates facing similar challenges be introduced to exchange ideas?

The aim isn’t constant communication, but meaningful opportunities to stay connected.

Make your content work harder

A brilliant conference programme can take months…even years to develop, bringing together expert speakers, research, discussions and valuable industry insights. That’s a lot of knowledge to squeeze into a day or two!

Session recordings, speaker interviews, articles, podcasts and practical resources can extend the reach and legacy of your event, providing value to those who attended and those who couldn’t.

A single thought-provoking discussion could inspire months of useful content and keep your organisation and its expertise front of mind.

Turn delegates into advocates

When delegates have a fantastic experience, they’re more likely to share what they’ve learned and encourage others to attend.

Encourage social sharing, invite delegates to contribute to future programmes and involve them in shaping your event. For membership organisations, this can turn occasional conference attendees into active, engaged members of your community.

Don’t forget your speakers, sponsors and exhibitors! They have their own networks and opportunities to help extend your event impact too.

Measure what really matters

Attendance figures, ticket sales and satisfaction scores are important, but they don’t tell the whole story. If your conference aims to inspire change, encourage collaboration or share knowledge, how do you know whether it’s achieved those things?

Consider checking in with delegates a few months later to ask if they applied something they learned? Made a valuable connection? Started a new collaboration?

Understanding these longer-term outcomes helps demonstrate the real value of your event to delegates, sponsors and stakeholders, while informing future programmes.

Think about legacy from day one

Creating lasting impact shouldn’t be an afterthought.

From the earliest planning stages, work with your event team to consider what you want delegates to take away, the connections you want to encourage and how you can maintain engagement afterwards.

We think the best conferences do more than deliver a brilliant experience on the day, they give people reasons to connect and reflect in the months to come too.
